Course Description
Land surveyors routinely work in environments that expose them to significant physical hazards, including active roadways, highway shoulders, construction zones, steep terrain, and areas with limited sight distance or no physical barrier from moving traffic. Proper preparation and hazard awareness are essential to protecting survey personnel. This course focuses on practical safety practices for survey crews working in high-exposure environments, with an emphasis on roadway and lane operations. Participants will learn to identify hazards, evaluate exposure risks, develop mitigation measures, coordinate with traffic control personnel, select and properly use personal protective equipment (PPE), and respond effectively to changing field conditions. The course is designed for licensed Professional Land Surveyors (PLS) who lead survey crews or oversee project planning and field operations. Participants should have a working knowledge of standard surveying practices. Topics include roadway exposure risks, traffic control principles, PPE and high-visibility requirements, situational awareness, hazard identification, behavioral safety practices, and emergency response procedures for roadway incidents. Upon completion, participants will have a practical framework for recognizing hazards, reducing crew exposure, and making informed safety decisions during field operations.
